Embark on the unforgettable Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days / 4 Nights, one of the most spectacular alternative trekking routes in Peru. This adventure combines snow-capped mountains, turquoise lagoons, high-Andean passes, tropical cloud forests and ancient Inca trails before reaching the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu.
The journey begins at Soraypampa with a hike to the beautiful Humantay Lake. You will then cross the impressive Salkantay Pass at approximately 4,650 meters above sea level before descending into the warmer landscapes of the cloud forest.
Along the route, you will enjoy a local coffee experience, an exciting zip-line adventure and time to relax in the Cocalmayo Hot Springs. You will also visit Llactapata, an archaeological site offering distant views of Machu Picchu, before continuing to Aguas Calientes.
The final day includes a professional guided tour of Machu Picchu and a comfortable return to Cusco by train and tourist transportation. This trek is ideal for adventurous travelers looking for a challenging and scenic alternative to the Classic Inca Trail.
The adventure begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We will travel through beautiful Andean landscapes toward Mollepata, where the group will stop for breakfast and receive an introduction to the trek.
After breakfast, we will continue by transportation to Soraypampa, the official starting point of the Salkantay Trek. Here, you will meet the support team, organize your duffel bag and begin the first hike of the journey.
From Soraypampa, we will ascend toward Humantay Lake. The hike takes approximately one hour and thirty minutes, depending on physical condition, weather and the pace of the group.
The trail becomes gradually steeper as we approach the lake. Upon arrival, you will admire its turquoise waters surrounded by dramatic mountains and glaciers.
Your guide will explain the spiritual importance of Humantay Lake and the surrounding mountains in Andean culture. You will have time to rest, take photographs and enjoy the scenery before beginning the descent.
After visiting the lake, we will return to the campsite at Soraypampa for lunch.
The afternoon will be free to rest, acclimatize and prepare for the most challenging section of the trek. In the evening, the trekking team will serve dinner and explain the itinerary for the following day.
This is the most physically demanding day of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.
We will wake up early and enjoy an energizing breakfast before beginning the ascent toward Salkantay Pass. The trail crosses rocky terrain and a winding section known as the Seven Snakes because of its numerous turns.
After several hours of climbing, we will reach Salkantay Pass at approximately 4,650 meters above sea level, the highest point of the trek.
From the pass, you will enjoy extraordinary views of Salkantay Mountain, surrounding glaciers and the high-Andean landscape. Your guide will explain the spiritual significance of the mountain, considered a powerful sacred protector by local communities.
There will be time to rest, take photographs and appreciate the landscape before beginning the descent.
We will descend toward Huayraqmachay, where lunch will be served.
After lunch, the ecosystem changes dramatically. Rocky mountain terrain gradually gives way to warmer valleys, tropical vegetation and the cloud forest.
We will continue toward Chaullay, where the support team will prepare the campsite. After dinner, you can rest and recover from the most demanding day of the trek.
After breakfast, we will begin a gentler hike through the lush cloud forest.
The route passes waterfalls, tropical vegetation, fruit plantations and areas where coffee is cultivated. Along the way, you may observe colorful birds, butterflies and other local wildlife.
We will continue to Sahuayaco, where lunch will be served and you will have time to rest.
In the afternoon, we will visit a local coffee plantation. A local producer will explain the complete process, from cultivating and harvesting the coffee cherries to roasting, grinding and preparing the final drink.
This experience offers an opportunity to learn about rural life and the importance of coffee production for local families.
After the coffee experience, transportation will take us to the zip-line area.
You will cross several cables installed above the cloud forest while enjoying impressive views of the valley. Professional equipment and safety instructions will be provided before the activity.
We will then travel to the Cocalmayo Hot Springs, where you can relax in naturally heated pools surrounded by tropical mountains.
The warm water is ideal for soothing tired muscles after the first days of trekking. After the visit, transportation will take us back to the accommodation area for dinner and an overnight stay.
We will begin the fourth day early, before sunrise, with breakfast and preparation for one of the longest sections of the trek.
The hike begins with an ascent along an ancient Inca trail still used by local communities. As daylight appears, you will enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and cloud forest.
We will reach Llactapata, an Inca archaeological site located on a mountain ridge.
From this privileged viewpoint, you may obtain your first distant view of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. Your guide will explain the relationship between Llactapata and the wider network of Inca roads and settlements.
After exploring the area, we will begin the descent toward the valley.
We will continue to the Hidroeléctrica area, where lunch will be served. After resting, the group will prepare for the final section toward Aguas Calientes.
Depending on the confirmed package and operational conditions, travelers may continue by train or walk along the railway route.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, you will check in at your hotel and have time to shower and rest.
In the evening, the group will meet for dinner. Your guide will provide detailed information about the entrance time, assigned visitor circuit and schedule for Machu Picchu the following morning.
The final day begins early with breakfast at the hotel.
At the scheduled time, we will walk to the bus station and travel approximately 25 to 30 minutes to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.
After completing the entrance procedures, you will begin a guided tour of Machu Picchu lasting approximately two hours.
Your professional guide will explain the history, architecture and possible functions of the archaeological sectors included in your assigned visitor circuit. The route may include agricultural terraces, ceremonial areas, residential sectors, plazas, temples and panoramic viewpoints.
Access to specific structures depends on the official circuit assigned to your entrance ticket and current sanctuary regulations.
Travelers with a previously confirmed ticket may hike Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain.
These tickets have limited availability and must be reserved well in advance. The activity will follow the entrance time and route established by the sanctuary authorities.
After the Machu Picchu visit, we will descend by bus to Aguas Calientes.
You will have time to purchase lunch at your own expense before boarding the Expedition-class train to Ollantaytambo.
Upon arrival at the train station, private transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cusco, marking the end of the unforgettable 5-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu.
